“ZoomText utilizes the Caps Lock key to perform hotkey commands. Please read what the “Getting Started” section says about the Caps Lock function below: This may especially trip up some people who have the habit of using Caps Lock instead of shift for individual letters. The new ZoomText commands rely on the Caps Lock key. I have not received my physical copy of ZoomText 11 yet, so I am unable to say whether the list in the User Guide is correct or not. However, if you search in Help for specific topics, they are correct in the section of the Help that describes that feature, just not the command list. So far I have found Jump to Center and SpeakIt to be incorrect. If you want to delve further into the commands, you should be aware the command list in the ZoomText 11 Help currently has at least two incorrect commands. The amount of changes makes reading it worthwhile with this edition. Beyond just commands, you will want to at least skim the Getting Started help topic that ZoomText directs you to. Print one of the shortcut cheat sheets below, and keep it handy. It will be confusing to have to remember two separate sets of commands. Also, be sure that all copies of ZoomText you work with are updated to 11, whether at home, school, or work.
Whether you are a teacher or ZoomText user yourself, do not install ZoomText 11 until you can set aside a few minute to practice the commands when you get started. I have some tips to make the transition easier. Don’t worry making the transition from your previous version of ZoomText is quick and easy.” The new command keys also eliminate conflicts and compatibility issues that existed in previous versions of ZoomText. ZoomText 11 has a new system of ‘Command Keys’ that are easier to learn and use. ZoomText is screen magnification software which enlarges a computer's display and makes navigation less strenuous for those with visual impairments. Learn more about JAWS and it's many features under 'features' here A widely popular screen reader within the blind community since 1995, JAWS effectively transforms the use of a computer from a visual experience into an auditory experience instead. Job Access With Speech (JAWS) is screen reading software by the company Freedom Scientific which reads on-screen text interactively while a user engages with the computer. You can also go to the Detroit Public Library’s website to learn more about our “Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH)” services. You will need your library card or a guess pass to sign-up for the computer.
Please ask the branch librarian for assistance finding the available computer and for help using the software. The Fusion JAWS and Zoomtext software is available on at least one of our handicap assessable computers at the Detroit Public Library branch locations. It provides a screen reading functionality program that allows blind and visually impaired users to read a computer screen either with screen magnification and visual enhancements or text-to-speech output.
